How Peloton instructor Jess Sims came to run the 2022 Boston Marathon for bombing survivor Michele Blackburn

Shannon Larson

Michele Blackburn went nine years without attending the Boston Marathon after the bombing in 2013 nearly claimed her legs as she stood outside Marathon Sports on Boylston Street. She was cheering with exuberance for her best friend participating in the race until the pulsing sound of the crowd was met with deafening silence.

But on Monday, she returned.

She stood exactly where she had been on that fateful day, when one step forward moments before the explosion saved her limbs. Her cries of support were reserved for the woman running in her honor: Jess Sims, a Peloton instructor who grew up in Peabody.

'I owe so much to Houston': ESPN's Jess Sims reflects on days as HISD teacher before rise to fame

Greg Rajan

The Houston connections for the teams in Monday’s College Football Playoff championship games are scant, with just one player from the city on the Michigan and Washington rosters.

For ESPN reporter Jess Sims, in her second season on the “College Gameday” crew, the connection to Houston is deep.

Well before Sims rose to fame as a Peloton instructor and landed gigs on ESPN and ABC’s “Good Morning America,” she was a recent college graduate who found herself in Houston as an educator with Teach for America, a nonprofit organization that develops educational leaders.
